First, the meaning. <\/span><span id=\"STtranscriptContent3\" class=\"STtranscriptContent\">This means to understand how to do something. Learn the ropes. <\/span><span id=\"STtranscriptContent4\" class=\"STtranscriptContent\">So let&#8217;s look at some example sentences. <\/span><span id=\"STtranscriptContent5\" class=\"STtranscriptContent\">It&#8217;s ok to ask questions while you&#8217;re learning the ropes. <\/span><span id=\"STtranscriptContent6\" class=\"STtranscriptContent\">Or, After I learn the ropes, I&#8217;l be able to do it on my own. <\/span><span id=\"STtranscriptContent7\" class=\"STtranscriptContent\">Learn begins with the L consonant sound, ll. <\/span><span id=\"STtranscriptContent8\" class=\"STtranscriptContent\">It then has the &#8216;ur&#8217; as in &#8216;her&#8217; vowel \/ R consonant<\/span> <span id=\"STtranscriptContent9\" class=\"STtranscriptContent\">sound together: rr, rr, rr, lear-. <\/span><span id=\"STtranscriptContent10\" class=\"STtranscriptContent\">So your tongue will go from being at the very top, <\/span><span id=\"STtranscriptContent11\" class=\"STtranscriptContent\">forward part of the roof of the mouth, lear-, rr, <\/span><span id=\"STtranscriptContent12\" class=\"STtranscriptContent\">to being pulled back, raised in the middle, <\/span><span id=\"STtranscriptContent13\" class=\"STtranscriptContent\">pressing against the insides of the top teeth with the tip<\/span> <span id=\"STtranscriptContent14\" class=\"STtranscriptContent\">then hanging down, lear-, further back in the mouth. Learn. Then<\/span> <span id=\"STtranscriptContent15\" class=\"STtranscriptContent\">Then the N consonant sound, so the tongue, doing acrobatics here,<\/span> <span id=\"STtranscriptContent16\" class=\"STtranscriptContent\">then has to go back up to the roof of the mouth, <\/span><span id=\"STtranscriptContent17\" class=\"STtranscriptContent\">learn, to make that N sound. Learn. <\/span><span id=\"STtranscriptContent18\" class=\"STtranscriptContent\">The: the TH consonant sound, voiced, with the schwa, learn the,<\/span> <span id=\"STtranscriptContent19\" class=\"STtranscriptContent\">learn the. It&#8217;s an unaccented word. <\/span><span id=\"STtranscriptContent20\" class=\"STtranscriptContent\">Ropes begins with the R consonant sound at the beginning of the word. <\/span><span id=\"STtranscriptContent21\" class=\"STtranscriptContent\">The lip position will be quite tight, rr, rr. <\/span><span id=\"STtranscriptContent22\" class=\"STtranscriptContent\">The tongue in that same R position. Ro-, <\/span><span id=\"STtranscriptContent23\" class=\"STtranscriptContent\">the &#8216;oh&#8217; as in &#8216;no&#8217; diphthong, ro-pp. <\/span><span id=\"STtranscriptContent24\" class=\"STtranscriptContent\">The P sound, so the lips have to come together, pp,<\/span> <span id=\"STtranscriptContent25\" class=\"STtranscriptContent\">to release that, and finally, the S sound. <\/span><span id=\"STtranscriptContent26\" class=\"STtranscriptContent\">Both the P and the S are unvoiced. <\/span><span id=\"STtranscriptContent27\" class=\"STtranscriptContent\">Ropes, ppss, ppss.
