[k].<\/span>\u00a0Or just like this word \u201cCore\u201d.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\nQuarter<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\nQuarterly\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\nI don\u2019t know how or why this habit shifted over time but 99 percent of the time, we say quarter in American English. Quarter. Listen.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\nSo\u00a0we have the K consonant not a KW cluster at the beginning. Then we have a flap T. We also have this word with just the K sound.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n[ki], also you can say [kei] and some people do pronounce this [kwei] but [ki] is the most common pronunciation. Do you know the word \u201cquay\u201d?\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\nIt\u2019s a platform along the water for loading or unloading ships. When I was researching this video, I kind of went down a rabbit hole of words that begin with Qu.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\nGo down a rabbit hole. This is an idiom and it means to get sucked into something that takes a lot of time more than expected as you learn one thing that leads to another and you just keep going with it.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\nIn this case, I stated looking for Qu pronunciations and I found all these great vocabulary words, I just kept going with it.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\nSo now we\u2019ll go over 7 advanced vocabulary words that begin with \u201cQu\u201d.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\nFirst, \u201cQuasi\u201d.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\nThis has a couple of different pronunciations all with that Kw cluster.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\nIn American English, [\u2018kwa\u00a0za\u026a] and [\u2018kwa\u00a0zi] are the two most common pronunciations.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\nIt means something that is similar to something. Kind of like something but not something all the way. Sort of confusing, this will be\u00a0more clear\u00a0as we look at some examples. Let\u2019s go to\u00a0Youglish.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\nQuasi-religious.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\nNot fully religious but a structure or setup that\u2019s like a religion.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\nA quasi-grain.\u00a0So\u00a0it\u2019s not categorized fully as a grain but has similar properties. It\u2019s kind of like a grain.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\nQuasi-real-time. Not exactly in real-time, not at the exact same time but close to it. Similar, almost real-time, quasi-real-time.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\nYou have to be quasi-masochistic. A little masochistic to be a writer. Masochistic means you kind of like doing things that are painful,\u00a0tedious, or generally unpleasant to do.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\nSo being a writer has some very challenging parts to it. Therefore, you have to be a little masochistic to want to be a writer or to be a writer.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\nQuasi. Stop dreaming of being in politics, completely put that desire away, destroy the dream, quash it.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\nQuack<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\nYou probably know that the literal meaning of this word. It\u2019s the sound we use in American English for the sound of a duck. But do you know how we use it as an idiom?\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\nIt means someone with authority who actually doesn\u2019t know what they are doing, doesn\u2019t do a good job.\u00a0 We use it most commonly with doctors. A bad doctor doesn\u2019t know what he\u2019s doing, maybe even giving harmful advice, he\u2019s a quack.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\nThought he was a quack. That\u2019s the only thing I don\u2019t like. The only thing that makes me unsure about recommending it.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\nThe most obvious qualm. Uneasiness with capitalism. The thing he was not comfortable with.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\nQuip<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\nThis is a clever of witty remark or comment. Sometimes you\u2019ll hear it read as a verb. He quipped instead of he said, if what he said was witty.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\nQuip. A funny thing he said. If you want a friend, buy a dog.
