(https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=lhD4eMboeMk)<\/a><\/noscript><\/div><\/p>\n<p><h2>Video Transcript:<\/h2><\/p>\n<p class=\"rteindent1\" style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">In this video, we&#8217;re going to talk about how to pronounce the word &#8216;Christmas,&#8217; and you&#8217;ll see some scenes from my Christmas party and from Christmastime in New York.\u00a0 The word &#8216;Christmas.&#8217;\u00a0 First, let&#8217;s point out that the T is silent.\u00a0 Christmas, Christmas.\u00a0 So it&#8217;s the first syllable that&#8217;s accented.\u00a0 And the CH here represents the K consonant sound.\u00a0 So the first sound is the KR consonant cluster, Chr-, Chr-.\u00a0 The vowel in the first syllable is the &#8216;ih&#8217; as in &#8216;sit&#8217; vowel.\u00a0 Chri-, Chri-.\u00a0 This syllable ends with the S sound.\u00a0 Chris-, Chris-.<\/p>\n<p class=\"rteindent1\" style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">The second syllable, unaccented, has the M consonant sound, schwa, S sound. -mes, -mes.\u00a0 It will be lower in pitch than the first syllable, which is stressed.\u00a0 Christmas, Christmas.\u00a0 As I&#8217;ve been discussing Christmas and Christmas plans with my students this week, I noticed that several of them have a misconception about the schwa-S sound.\u00a0 A lot of my current students have a native language of Mandarin.\u00a0 And I&#8217;ve noticed not just with this word, but with others, that the schwa-S sometimes sounds like it has an R in it.\u00a0 So, Christmas becomes Christmers, er, er, ers.\u00a0 And focus becomes focurs.\u00a0 Famous becomes famours, rs.\u00a0 So to prevent this from\u00a0 happening, make sure the tongue does not pull back.\u00a0 The er sound is made when the tongue pulls back some.\u00a0 So, in this second syllable, -mas, -mas, -mas, the tongue can stay forward the whole time for the schwa and the S sound.\u00a0\u00a0 Christmas, Christmas.<\/p>\n<p class=\"rteindent1\" style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">At our holiday party this year, we had a wonderful meal followed by a gift exchange and cookie decorating.\u00a0 In our gift exchange, we each brought one gift.\u00a0 Then we drew numbers to determine the order in which to open gifts.\u00a0 When it was your turn, you could either steal a gift that had already been opened, or open a new gift yourself.<\/p>\n<p class=\"rteindent1\" style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">&gt;&gt; OK, so I draw my number.\u00a0 I want to make sure I get the best one.\u00a0 Now, no one else can see, except for my Rachel&#8217;s English users.<br \/>&gt;&gt; K, Tim has drawn number one, the lucky duck.<\/p>\n<p class=\"rteindent1\" style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">Lucky duck is an idiom you can use for someone who has good fortune.\u00a0 In our gift exchange, whoever drew number one got to go first, but then take his choice of all the open gifts at the end. Lucky duck.\u00a0 Both words have the &#8216;uh&#8217; as in &#8216;butter&#8217; sound followed by the K sound.\u00a0 Uk, uk.\u00a0 Lucky duck.\u00a0 Listen again.<\/p>\n<p class=\"rteindent1\" style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">&gt;&gt; K, Tim has drawn number one, the lucky duck.<br \/>&gt;&gt; Tim, I feel like you rigged that somehow.<br \/>&gt;&gt; I hope that you don&#8217;t need a scissors.\u00a0 Just tear the paper.<br \/>&gt;&gt; That is some tea that I brought back from Africa in May.<br \/>&gt;&gt; Whoa!
