American English Pronunciation (https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=bYWlQur5g5s)<\/a><\/noscript><\/div><\/p>\n<p><h2>Video Transcript:<\/h2><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">In this American English pronunciation video, we&#8217;re going to go over the difference between the [w] and [\u0279] consonants.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">A lot of people have problems with the R consonant sound.\u00a0 So what they&#8217;ll do is substitute in a W consonant.\u00a0 We don&#8217;t want to do that.\u00a0 How are these two sounds the same?\u00a0 For both of these sounds, the lips will round.\u00a0 Ww, ww, wow.\u00a0 Or, for the R, rr, Rachel, Rachel.\u00a0 The tongue position, however, is quite different.\u00a0\u00a0 For the W consonant, the tongue tip is down here, and the back part of the tongue stretches up, so the tongue stretches this way.\u00a0 Ww, ww, wow.\u00a0 For the R consonant, the back part of the tongue does stretch up, here towards the middle part of the roof of the mouth.\u00a0 The front part of the tongue pulls back.\u00a0 So, with the W, the tongue is stretching.\u00a0 With the R, the tongue is sort of pulling up into itself.\u00a0 So, the front part of the tongue shouldn&#8217;t be touching anything.\u00a0 The middle part of the tongue is raising, it&#8217;s lifting here towards the roof of the mouth, and it&#8217;s touching either the roof of the mouth, or the insides\/bottom of teeth here.\u00a0 Rr, rr.\u00a0 So, for the W, stretch.\u00a0 For the R, pull.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">Some students can get a solid beginning R sound, but then still have problems in clusters.\u00a0 For example, the word break, break.\u00a0 This will often sound like &#8216;bweak, bweak&#8217;.\u00a0 So the only issue is the tongue position.\u00a0 You have to take just a little bit more time to make sure your tongue is pulling back and up.\u00a0 You might want to hold out the R as you practice, brrrrrrrreak.\u00a0 And feel the contact here to make sure you know that you&#8217;re getting the right tongue position.\u00a0 Here&#8217;s a list of the R consonant clusters.\u00a0 And remember, the tongue must pull back and up.\u00a0 Feel that point of contact.\u00a0 Practice slowly.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">BR, bread.\u00a0 CR, crash.\u00a0 DR, drop.\u00a0 FR, friend.\u00a0 GR, great.\u00a0 PR, price.\u00a0\u00a0 SCR, screen.\u00a0 SHR, shred.\u00a0 SPR, spring.\u00a0 STR, street.\u00a0 THR, three.\u00a0 TR, tree.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">That&#8217;s it, and thanks so much for using Rachel&#8217;s English.<\/p>\n<p><a name=\"video\"><\/a><strong>Video:<\/strong><\/p>\n<div style=\"width: 640px;\" class=\"wp-video\"><!--[if lt IE 9]><script>document.createElement('video');<\/script><![endif]-->\n<video class=\"wp-video-shortcode\" id=\"video-173741-1\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" preload=\"metadata\" controls=\"controls\"><source type=\"video\/mp4\" src=\"https:\/\/07f1c47b71c75472a3cc-b7eea9689205a6672fd1aa00be922d89.ssl.cf1.rackcdn.com\/228%20-%20R%20vs.%20W%20Sounds%20-%20American%20English%20Pronunciation.mp4?_=1\" \/><a href=\"https:\/\/07f1c47b71c75472a3cc-b7eea9689205a6672fd1aa00be922d89.ssl.cf1.rackcdn.com\/228%20-%20R%20vs.%20W%20Sounds%20-%20American%20English%20Pronunciation.mp4\">https:\/\/07f1c47b71c75472a3cc-b7eea9689205a6672fd1aa00be922d89.ssl.cf1.rackcdn.com\/228%20-%20R%20vs.%20W%20Sounds%20-%20American%20English%20Pronunciation.mp4<\/a><\/video><\/div>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>These two consonant sounds can be tricky. \u00a0The difference is in the tongue position \u2013 you have to pull the tongue back and up for the R.
