Just by reading it.<\/span> <span id=\"STtranscriptContent13\" class=\"STtranscriptContent\">So I&#8217;m going to put four and a half teaspoons<\/span> <span id=\"STtranscriptContent14\" class=\"STtranscriptContent\">of yeast in, right?<\/span><br \/><span id=\"STtranscriptContent15\" class=\"STtranscriptContent\">&gt;&gt; Yes, that is correct.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span id=\"STtranscriptContent16\" class=\"STtranscriptContent\">Let&#8217;s take a look at a T<\/span> <span id=\"STtranscriptContent17\" class=\"STtranscriptContent\">in an ending consonant cluster.<\/span> <span id=\"STtranscriptContent18\" class=\"STtranscriptContent\">In the phrase &#8216;just confirm&#8217;,<\/span> <span id=\"STtranscriptContent19\" class=\"STtranscriptContent\">the T was dropped.<\/span> <span id=\"STtranscriptContent20\" class=\"STtranscriptContent\">In the phrase &#8216;just by&#8217;, the T was dropped.<\/span> <span id=\"STtranscriptContent21\" class=\"STtranscriptContent\">In the phrase &#8216;yeast in&#8217;, we heard the T.<\/span> <span id=\"STtranscriptContent22\" class=\"STtranscriptContent\">We also heard the T in the word &#8216;correct&#8217;.<\/span> <span id=\"STtranscriptContent23\" class=\"STtranscriptContent\">What&#8217;s going on here?<\/span> <span id=\"STtranscriptContent24\" class=\"STtranscriptContent\">If the T comes between two consonant sounds,<\/span> <span id=\"STtranscriptContent25\" class=\"STtranscriptContent\">like it did in the first two phrases,<\/span> <span id=\"STtranscriptContent26\" class=\"STtranscriptContent\">native speakers will often drop the T.<\/span> <span id=\"STtranscriptContent27\" class=\"STtranscriptContent\">This is true of the D sound as well.<\/span> <span id=\"STtranscriptContent28\" class=\"STtranscriptContent\">Just confirm, just by, yeast in, correct.<\/span> <span id=\"STtranscriptContent29\" class=\"STtranscriptContent\">Let&#8217;s listen again.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span id=\"STtranscriptContent30\" class=\"STtranscriptContent\">&gt;&gt; And, will you just confirm<\/span> <span id=\"STtranscriptContent31\" class=\"STtranscriptContent\">that this is accurate?<\/span> <span id=\"STtranscriptContent32\" class=\"STtranscriptContent\">Just by reading it.<\/span> <span id=\"STtranscriptContent33\" class=\"STtranscriptContent\">So I&#8217;m going to put four and a half teaspoons<\/span> <span id=\"STtranscriptContent34\" class=\"STtranscriptContent\">of yeast in, right?<\/span><br \/><span id=\"STtranscriptContent35\" class=\"STtranscriptContent\">&gt;&gt; Yes, that is correct.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span id=\"STtranscriptContent36\" class=\"STtranscriptContent\">&gt;&gt; And then we need the sugar.<\/span> <span id=\"STtranscriptContent37\" class=\"STtranscriptContent\">Which we already decided<\/span> <span id=\"STtranscriptContent38\" class=\"STtranscriptContent\">was two and a half teaspoons.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span id=\"STtranscriptContent39\" class=\"STtranscriptContent\">Did you notice that I dropped the L sound<\/span> <span id=\"STtranscriptContent40\" class=\"STtranscriptContent\">in the word &#8216;already&#8217;. Did you notice?<\/span> <span id=\"STtranscriptContent61\" class=\"STtranscriptContent\">The T was dropped in &#8216;just&#8217;<\/span> <span id=\"STtranscriptContent62\" class=\"STtranscriptContent\">because the next sound was a consonant.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span id=\"STtranscriptContent63\" class=\"STtranscriptContent\">&gt;&gt; And I bought just<\/span> <span id=\"STtranscriptContent64\" class=\"STtranscriptContent\">the perfect amount of flour.<\/span><br \/><span id=\"STtranscriptContent65\" class=\"STtranscriptContent\">&gt;&gt; So this needs to be three minutes.<\/span> <span id=\"STtranscriptContent66\" class=\"STtranscriptContent\">Do we need to be \u2026<\/span><br \/><span id=\"STtranscriptContent67\" class=\"STtranscriptContent\">&gt;&gt; Oh yeah. Let that stand for three minutes.<\/span> <span id=\"STtranscriptContent68\" class=\"STtranscriptContent\">And I took the clock out of the room<\/span> <span id=\"STtranscriptContent69\" class=\"STtranscriptContent\">because it was so freaking loud.<\/span> <span id=\"STtranscriptContent70\" class=\"STtranscriptContent\"><\/span><br \/><span id=\"STtranscriptContent71\" class=\"STtranscriptContent\">&gt;&gt; Don&#8217;t you have a watch on?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span id=\"STtranscriptContent72\" class=\"STtranscriptContent\">Did you notice that<\/span> <span id=\"STtranscriptContent73\" class=\"STtranscriptContent\">Laura dropped the H in &#8216;have&#8217;?<\/span> <span id=\"STtranscriptContent74\" class=\"STtranscriptContent\">This is a common reduction.<\/span> <span id=\"STtranscriptContent75\" class=\"STtranscriptContent\">Dropping the H in function words<\/span> <span id=\"STtranscriptContent76\" class=\"STtranscriptContent\">&#8216;have&#8217;, &#8216;had&#8217;, &#8216;her&#8217;, &#8216;his&#8217;.<\/span> <span id=\"STtranscriptContent77\" class=\"STtranscriptContent\">You have a, you have a.<\/span> <span id=\"STtranscriptContent78\" class=\"STtranscriptContent\">Don&#8217;t you have a watch on?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span id=\"STtranscriptContent79\" class=\"STtranscriptContent\">&gt;&gt; Don&#8217;t you have a watch on?<\/span><br \/><span id=\"STtranscriptContent80\" class=\"STtranscriptContent\">&gt;&gt; No, but my iPad says\u2026<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span id=\"STtranscriptContent81\" class=\"STtranscriptContent\">&gt;&gt; It does say,<\/span> <span id=\"STtranscriptContent82\" class=\"STtranscriptContent\">&#8220;Add additional flour if needed.&#8221;<\/span> <span id=\"STtranscriptContent83\" class=\"STtranscriptContent\">I&#8217;m saying, I need it.<\/span><br \/><span id=\"STtranscriptContent84\" class=\"STtranscriptContent\">&gt;&gt; Do you want me to get some regular flour?<\/span><br \/><span id=\"STtranscriptContent85\" class=\"STtranscriptContent\">&gt;&gt; I got it right here.<\/span><br \/><span id=\"STtranscriptContent86\" class=\"STtranscriptContent\">&gt;&gt; Ok. Yeah. It seems that you do need it.<\/span><br \/><span id=\"STtranscriptContent87\" class=\"STtranscriptContent\">&gt;&gt; Yeah.<\/span><br \/><span id=\"STtranscriptContent88\" class=\"STtranscriptContent\">&gt;&gt; And I don&#8217;t mean &#8216;knead it&#8217;.<\/span><br \/><span id=\"STtranscriptContent89\" class=\"STtranscriptContent\">&gt;&gt; No, you mean the other &#8216;need&#8217;!<\/span><br \/><span id=\"STtranscriptContent90\" class=\"STtranscriptContent\">&gt;&gt; Yeah!<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span id=\"STtranscriptContent91\" class=\"STtranscriptContent\">Another homophone. &#8216;Need&#8217; and &#8216;knead&#8217;.<\/span> <span id=\"STtranscriptContent92\" class=\"STtranscriptContent\">Different spellings, different meanings,<\/span> <span id=\"STtranscriptContent93\" class=\"STtranscriptContent\">but pronounced the same.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span id=\"STtranscriptContent94\" class=\"STtranscriptContent\">&gt;&gt; I&#8217;m saying, I need it.<\/span><br \/><span id=\"STtranscriptContent95\" class=\"STtranscriptContent\">&gt;&gt; We&#8217;re going to knead it. [3x]<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span id=\"STtranscriptContent96\" class=\"STtranscriptContent\">&gt;&gt; So, the bagels rested.<\/span> <span id=\"STtranscriptContent97\" class=\"STtranscriptContent\">Quietly, they were behaving very well.<\/span> <span id=\"STtranscriptContent98\" class=\"STtranscriptContent\">For four minutes,<\/span> <span id=\"STtranscriptContent99\" class=\"STtranscriptContent\">and now we&#8217;re making the hole.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span id=\"STtranscriptContent100\" class=\"STtranscriptContent\">For four.<\/span> <span id=\"STtranscriptContent101\" class=\"STtranscriptContent\">Did you hear how I reduced<\/span> <span id=\"STtranscriptContent102\" class=\"STtranscriptContent\">the function word &#8216;for&#8217; to &#8216;fer&#8217;,<\/span> <span id=\"STtranscriptContent103\" class=\"STtranscriptContent\">but I did not reduce the content word &#8216;four&#8217;,<\/span> <span id=\"STtranscriptContent104\" class=\"STtranscriptContent\">for four.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span id=\"STtranscriptContent105\" class=\"STtranscriptContent\">&gt;&gt; For four minutes,<\/span> <span id=\"STtranscriptContent106\" class=\"STtranscriptContent\">and now we&#8217;re making the hole.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span id=\"STtranscriptContent107\" class=\"STtranscriptContent\">&gt;&gt; Ok. Where are your hot pads?<\/span><br \/><span id=\"STtranscriptContent108\" class=\"STtranscriptContent\">&gt;&gt; Third drawer down.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span id=\"STtranscriptContent109\" class=\"STtranscriptContent\">Where are your.<\/span> <span id=\"STtranscriptContent110\" class=\"STtranscriptContent\">That&#8217;s a lot of schwa\/R sounds.<\/span> <span id=\"STtranscriptContent111\" class=\"STtranscriptContent\">I reduced &#8216;are&#8217; to &#8216;er&#8217;, and &#8216;your&#8217; to &#8216;yer&#8217;.<\/span> <span id=\"STtranscriptContent112\" class=\"STtranscriptContent\">But I still made it sound like<\/span> <span id=\"STtranscriptContent113\" class=\"STtranscriptContent\">three different syllables by reemphasizing<\/span> <span id=\"STtranscriptContent114\" class=\"STtranscriptContent\">the R sound for the second syllable.<\/span> <span id=\"STtranscriptContent115\" class=\"STtranscriptContent\">Where are, where are, where are,<\/span> <span id=\"STtranscriptContent116\" class=\"STtranscriptContent\">where are your, where are your.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span id=\"STtranscriptContent117\" class=\"STtranscriptContent\">&gt;&gt; Where are your hot pads?<\/span><br \/><span id=\"STtranscriptContent118\" class=\"STtranscriptContent\">&gt;&gt; &gt;&gt; Third drawer down.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span id=\"STtranscriptContent119\" class=\"STtranscriptContent\">&gt;&gt; We are taking an egg white,<\/span> <span id=\"STtranscriptContent120\" class=\"STtranscriptContent\">separated from the yolk.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span id=\"STtranscriptContent121\" class=\"STtranscriptContent\">Another homophone.<\/span> <span id=\"STtranscriptContent122\" class=\"STtranscriptContent\">&#8216;Yolk&#8217;, with the letter L, is the yellow,<\/span> <span id=\"STtranscriptContent123\" class=\"STtranscriptContent\">is the yellow, middle part of an egg.<\/span> <span id=\"STtranscriptContent124\" class=\"STtranscriptContent\">The other yoke is this.<\/span> <span id=\"STtranscriptContent125\" class=\"STtranscriptContent\">Something you can use to attach animals<\/span> <span id=\"STtranscriptContent126\" class=\"STtranscriptContent\">to a cart or something similar.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span id=\"STtranscriptContent127\" class=\"STtranscriptContent\">&gt;&gt; \u2026separated from the yolk,<\/span> <span id=\"STtranscriptContent128\" class=\"STtranscriptContent\">and brushing it on the bagels.<\/span> <span id=\"STtranscriptContent129\" class=\"STtranscriptContent\">Because not only does it give it a shine,<\/span> <span id=\"STtranscriptContent130\" class=\"STtranscriptContent\">but if you want to add some toppings to it,<\/span> <span id=\"STtranscriptContent131\" class=\"STtranscriptContent\">like onion flakes,<\/span> <span id=\"STtranscriptContent132\" class=\"STtranscriptContent\">you can do that and it sticks that way.<\/span> <span id=\"STtranscriptContent133\" class=\"STtranscriptContent\">Because it&#8217;s kind of sticky.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span id=\"STtranscriptContent134\" class=\"STtranscriptContent\">Just like most sentences<\/span> <span id=\"STtranscriptContent135\" class=\"STtranscriptContent\">in conversational American English,<\/span> <span id=\"STtranscriptContent136\" class=\"STtranscriptContent\">there were a lot of reductions there.<\/span> <span id=\"STtranscriptContent137\" class=\"STtranscriptContent\">&#8216;Want to&#8217; became &#8216;wanna&#8217;. If you wanna add.<\/span> <span id=\"STtranscriptContent138\" class=\"STtranscriptContent\">&#8216;Can&#8217; was reduced to &#8216;kn&#8217;. You can do that.<\/span> <span id=\"STtranscriptContent139\" class=\"STtranscriptContent\">&#8216;Because&#8217; was reduced to &#8216;cuz&#8217;.
