Excuse me, where\u2019s the bathroom?<br \/>&gt;&gt; Around the corner.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">&gt;&gt; Excuse me, do you have the time?<br \/>&gt;&gt; Ah, it\u2019s about 9:15.<br \/>&gt;&gt; Thank you sir.<br \/>&gt;&gt; You\u2019re welcome.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">Because we\u2019re using it to get someone\u2019s attention, excuse me, it has to be very clear and a little bit louder.\u00a0 So, we begin with the IH as in SIT vowel.\u00a0 Ih, ih, ih, a little jaw drop.\u00a0 Ex-, ex-, ex-.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">To make the K, the back part of the tongue reaches up and touches the soft palate.\u00a0 Ex-, kk, kk, ks, ks.\u00a0 Do you see how my jaw closes?\u00a0 That\u2019s because the teeth have to be together to make the S.\u00a0 The tongue tip is down, pressing here, to put a little tension in the tongue, behind the bottom front teeth.\u00a0 Ex-, ex-.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">The back part of the tongue reaches up and touches the soft palate, kk, kk, kk.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">da-DA-da, excuse me.\u00a0 It has the EW as in FEW diphthong.\u00a0 So, the tongue tip is down, pressing behind the bottom front teeth.\u00a0 For the first half of the diphthong, the front part of the tongue is reaching towards the roof of the mouth, yy, yy, to make that Y sound.\u00a0 Excu-, yy, yy, yy.\u00a0 Then we have the OO vowel, excu-, so the lips will round.\u00a0 Excuse me, -se me, -se me.\u00a0 Then we have the Z sound, the M consonant, and the EE vowel.\u00a0 So, so make the Z sound, the tongue is here, touching the back of the bottom front teeth, and the teeth are closed, zz, zz.\u00a0 It\u2019s just like the S except I\u2019m vibrating the vocal cords with my voice, zz.\u00a0 ZZ-mm.\u00a0 Then we just close the lips to go into the M sound.\u00a0 Excuse me, ee.\u00a0 And then the EE as in SHE vowel.\u00a0 Lips will part, jaw won\u2019t drop much because the tongue is lifting pretty high to the roof of the mouth.\u00a0 The tongue tip is down, but the front part lifts.\u00a0 Excuse me, excuse me.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">Let\u2019s watch one more time.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">&gt;&gt; Excuse me, where\u2019s the bathroom?<br \/>&gt;&gt; Around the corner.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">&gt;&gt; Excuse me, do you have the time?<br \/>&gt;&gt; Ah, it\u2019s about 9:15.<br \/>&gt;&gt; Thank you sir.<br \/>&gt;&gt; You\u2019re welcome.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">We also use this phrase to get around somebody, or if we accidentally bump into somebody in a crowd.\u00a0 Now here, we don\u2019t really need to get someone\u2019s attention, so we might really mutter it, excuse me, \u2018scuse me, \u2018scuse me, dropping the first syllable altogether.\u00a0 I\u2019ve noticed sometimes I even almost just whisper it if I accidentally bump into somebody, or if I need to slide between two people, \u2018scuse me [3x].\u00a0 So this is very different from the first case where we needed to get someone\u2019s attention, and we had to say it really clearly.\u00a0 Excuse me, \u2018scuse me, \u2018scuse me.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">&gt;&gt; \u2018Scuse me, \u2018scuse me.<br \/>&gt;&gt; \u2018Scuse me, \u2018scuse me, thank you.\u00a0 \u2018Scuse me.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">We can also use this phrase if we don\u2019t understand, we need somebody to repeat what they\u2019ve said.\u00a0 Excuse me?\u00a0 Excuse me?\u00a0 Here again I\u2019m dropping the first syllable.\u00a0 You don\u2019t have to.\u00a0 Excuse me?\u00a0 But it doesn\u2019t have to be so clearly pronounced because we\u2019re not getting someone\u2019s attention.\u00a0 We don\u2019t have to get the focus here, we already have the focus.\u00a0 Excuse me, excuse me?\u00a0 Notice also, the voice is going up in pitch.\u00a0 That means it\u2019s a question.\u00a0 That\u2019s the signal to the person that I didn\u2019t understand.\u00a0 Excuse me?<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">&gt;&gt; So I don\u2019t know what I\u2019m going to get.<br \/>&gt;&gt; Excuse me?<br \/>&gt;&gt; I don\u2019t know what I\u2019m going to get.<br \/>&gt;&gt; Ah.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">&gt;&gt; How about three?<br \/>&gt;&gt; Excuse me?<br \/>&gt;&gt; How about three?<br \/>&gt;&gt; Yeah, three works.<br \/>&gt;&gt; Okay.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">&gt;&gt; Excuse me?\u00a0\u00a0 [6x]<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">It\u2019s just like saying \u2018What did you say?\u2019, only it\u2019s a little faster.\u00a0 Excuse me, excuse me?<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">This phrase can also be used sarcastically, as a response to somebody overreacting to something.\u00a0 For example, \u2018Rachel, you always make a mess in the kitchen.\u2019\u00a0 \u2018Excuse me.\u2019\u00a0 Now, when we use it sarcastically like that, we tend to really stretch out the stressed syllable, excuse, excuse.\u00a0 Well excuse me.\u00a0 Of course, it\u2019s a little bit rude, you would be using this, maybe, in an argument with somebody.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">&gt;&gt; Dad, I can\u2019t believe you ate the last cookie!<br \/>&gt;&gt; Well excuse me!<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">So there you go, four different ways to use and pronounce the phrase excuse me.\u00a0 So the pronunciation matters.\u00a0 Are we trying to get somebody\u2019s attention?\u00a0 Then we need to be really clear.\u00a0 Are we signaling that we don\u2019t understand?\u00a0\u00a0 Then we need to phrase it as a question with the pitch going up.\u00a0 Excuse me?\u00a0 Instead of, excuse me.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">&gt;&gt;
