American English Pronunciation (https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=0SqoJip29rw)<\/a><\/noscript><\/div><\/p>\n<p><h2>Video Transcript:<\/h2><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">In this American English pronunciation video, you\u2019re going to learn how to pronounce the word \u2018water\u2019.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">This video is being made on vacation.\u00a0 So, the background\u2019s weird, the lighting\u2019s weird, but we get the benefit of having lots of other fun people be in this video so that you can better learn American English pronunciation.\u00a0 We\u2019re going to learn how to pronounce the word \u2018water\u2019.\u00a0 \u2018Water\u2019 is especially interesting because it\u2019s so different in American English than it is in British English.\u00a0 So let\u2019s start.\u00a0 How do we pronounce it?<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">The lips will round for the W consonant.\u00a0 Wa-.\u00a0 Then we have a vowel.\u00a0 It\u2019s a lot more open in American English than it is in British English.\u00a0 I use the AH as in FATHER vowel, wa-, ah, where my jaw drops quite a bit.\u00a0 The back part of the tongue presses down a little bit.\u00a0 Wa-, ah, wa-.\u00a0 So that\u2019s a very open sound.\u00a0\u00a0 Water.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">Then we have the letter T.\u00a0 It comes between two vowels.\u00a0 So, in American English, we\u2019re going to make that a Flap T.\u00a0 It will sound like a D.\u00a0 In British English they don\u2019t do that.\u00a0 They keep a True \u2018tt\u2019 sound.\u00a0 Water, water.\u00a0 This Flap T sound is the R sound in some other languages like Arabic, Spanish, Portuguese.\u00a0 But, in American English we call it a Flap T, and the tongue just bounces up against the roof of the mouth.\u00a0 Water, -ter, -ter.\u00a0 So, it\u2019s a quick easy movement and there\u2019s no stop of air.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">Then we have the schwa-R sound.\u00a0 In American English we maintain a real R sound.\u00a0 In British English, they don\u2019t when it\u2019s at the end of a word.\u00a0 Water, -er, -er.\u00a0 It\u2019s a very closed sound.\u00a0\u00a0 So to make the sound, the tongue lifts up and it pulls back a little bit.\u00a0 So, the middle part of the tongue is touching:\u00a0 maybe the roof of the mouth, maybe the teeth, rr, rr, while the front has pulled back and up a little bit, so it\u2019s not touching anything, rr.\u00a0 We can hold that sound out.\u00a0 The tongue shouldn\u2019t be flapping, ruh, ruh.\u00a0 That\u2019s only for the Flap T.\u00a0 Here it holds in place:\u00a0 water, rr, rr.\u00a0 You can see the lips will round a little bit for that final sound as well.\u00a0 Water.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">You don\u2019t need to worry about making a separate schwa sound.\u00a0 Just go straight from the Flap into the R.\u00a0 Water, water.\u00a0 Now we\u2019re going to see a little bit of video of me walking to the well with my family to fill up our water bottles, and you\u2019re going to hear the word \u2018water\u2019 lots of times.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">&gt;&gt; How, like, old-fashioned are we that we have to walk to the well to get water?<br \/>&gt;&gt; I know.<br \/>&gt;&gt; We\u2019ll here we\u2019re just on our way to the well to get some water!<br \/>&gt;&gt; See, in rural Michigan\u2026<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">&gt;&gt;\u00a0 How\u2019s it taste, David?<br \/>&gt;&gt; Oh, the water is really good.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">&gt;&gt; Jace, how was the water?<br \/>&gt;&gt; Cold and good.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">&gt;&gt; How\u2019s the water?<br \/>&gt;&gt; ???<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">&gt;&gt; That water tastes great.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">&gt;&gt; Alright, does everyone have all the water they need?<br \/>&gt;&gt; I have my water.\u00a0 Let\u2019s go.<br \/>&gt;&gt; Wait!\u00a0 One more.<br \/>&gt;&gt; Do you have your water?<br \/>&gt;&gt; I got my water.<br \/>&gt;&gt; Jace, do you need more water?<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">&gt;&gt; Karina, can you way \u2018water\u2019?<br \/>&gt;&gt; Wa-wa.<br \/>&gt;&gt; Say \u2018water\u2019 for the camera.<br \/>&gt;&gt;
