{"id":299963,"date":"2023-10-02T21:19:00","date_gmt":"2023-10-02T21:19:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/rachelsenglish.com\/?p=299963"},"modified":"2024-10-02T21:20:48","modified_gmt":"2024-10-02T21:20:48","slug":"flap-t-exceptions","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/rachelsenglish.com\/flap-t-exceptions\/","title":{"rendered":"Flap T Exceptions?"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Special thanks to Lin L for this question:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Question:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Are these words exceptions to the Flap T rule (T\u2019s between vowels are Flap T\u2019s):&nbsp; Secretary, cemetery, tentative<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Are there patterns to exceptions?&nbsp;<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Answer:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>First, let me clarify the rule.\u00a0 The T between vowels (of after an R before a vowel) will be a Flap T,\u00a0<em>unless the T begins a stressed syllable<\/em>.\u00a0 I have explained this in my video\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=iZ8p85NRAsI\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">T pronunciations<\/a>\u00a0(this part of the rule is discussed around 7:25) but I reference it a lot in other videos, and when I do I usually don\u2019t take the time to go through the whole rule.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>With the suffix \u2013tary or \u2013tery, the second-to-last syllable has secondary stress.&nbsp; When you look it up in a dictionary, it is marked by this symbol:&nbsp; [\u02cc] (primary stress uses this symbol [\u02c8]).&nbsp; So even though the syllable doesn\u2019t have primary stress, it is still a stressed syllable, and therefore will be at True T in words like \u2018secretary\u2019 and \u2018cemetery\u2019.<br>This is also true of the first T in the suffix \u2018tate\u2019:&nbsp; hesitate, annotate.<br>And the first T in the suffix \u2018tude\u2019:&nbsp; attitude, gratitude.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It\u2019s quite possible that there are other suffixes like this that I can\u2019t think of right now.&nbsp; \ud83d\ude42<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As for \u2018tentative\u2019, and other words that end in vowel\/diphthong + tive:&nbsp; negative, positive:&nbsp; there is no stress on that syllable, and I would make that T a Flap T.&nbsp; I think most people in casual conversation would do the same.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There is one exception that I can think of:&nbsp; politics.&nbsp; The last syllable isn\u2019t stressed, and yet it is a True T.&nbsp; However, it is not a rule to be applied to the \u2013tic ending:&nbsp; critic, fanatic, mathematics, etc., would sound more natural and casual with a Flap T.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Special thanks to Lin L for this question: Question: Are these words exceptions to the Flap T rule (T\u2019s between vowels are Flap T\u2019s):&nbsp; Secretary, cemetery, tentative Are there patterns to exceptions?&nbsp; Answer: First, let me clarify the rule.\u00a0 The T between vowels (of after an R before a vowel) will be a Flap T,\u00a0unless [&hellip;]<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":1,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"closed","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"_acf_changed":false,"_genesis_hide_title":false,"_genesis_hide_breadcrumbs":false,"_genesis_hide_singular_image":false,"_genesis_hide_footer_widgets":false,"_genesis_custom_body_class":"","_genesis_custom_post_class":"","_genesis_layout":"","footnotes":""},"categories":[214],"tags":[],"class_list":{"0":"post-299963","1":"post","2":"type-post","3":"status-publish","4":"format-standard","6":"category-practice-american-sounds","7":"entry"},"acf":[],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v24.9 - https:\/\/yoast.com\/wordpress\/plugins\/seo\/ -->\n<title>Flap T Exceptions?
