First, let\u2019s here this snippet of conversation.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">We need to schedule a time to meet to plan the client presentation.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">Yeah. I&#8217;m ready.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">Now, let\u2019s analyze.\u00a0 At the end of the video, there will be information on where to find more of these valuable Ben Franklin exercise\u00ae videos.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">We need to schedule a time to meet to plan the client presentation.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">Yeah. I&#8217;m ready.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">We need to schedule a time&#8211;<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">Need. The most stressed there, the longest, the clearest.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">Also &#8216;time&#8217;.\u00a0 We need to schedule a time-<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">We need to schedule a time&#8211;<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">We need to schedule a time&#8211;<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">The intonation was a little different there. She&#8217;s going to continue on for the rest of the sentence.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">&#8216;Scheduled&#8217;, a content word but not quite as stressed as the word &#8216;need&#8217; and &#8216;time&#8217;.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">Schedule&#8211; Schedule&#8211; Schedule&#8211;<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">So, not every content word has the exact same stress within a sentence.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">Within a sentence, the speaker is always choosing subconsciously the words to bring out.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">So she brings out the word &#8216;need&#8217;.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">The verb, what has to happen, we need to do this.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">And she brings out time which is on\u00a0 their calendar, the time they&#8217;re going to\u00a0 block off for this meeting that they&#8217;re\u00a0 going to have.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">Let\u2019s look at the word \u2018to\u2019, here, the first occurrence of it.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">We need\u00a0 to&#8211; we need to&#8211;\u00a0 we need to schedule a time<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">Now we know that the word \u2018to\u2019 reduces to have the schwa, and the T can either be a true T or a flap T. Let&#8217;s listen to\u00a0 what happens here:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">We need \u00a0to&#8211; we need to&#8211;\u00a0 we need to&#8211;<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">So it&#8217;s not really a flap and it&#8217;s not really a true T.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">Really she&#8217;s just dropped the T altogether because it sound before is a D.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">So the D between vowels is pronounced like a flap and the T between vowels is pronounced like a flap, the same sound.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">So here the D comes between two vowels. I don&#8217;t think she does quite a flap, I feel like I hear some of that D sound which is when the tongue is in position for the D but the air is stopped and we get that sound in the throat.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">Need\u2014dd\u2014dd\u2014we need to&#8211;<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">We need\u00a0 to&#8211; we need to&#8211;\u00a0 we need to schedule a time<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">Needa&#8211; so to me, it&#8217;s more of a D than a flap D I don&#8217;t hear a T at all. Needa\u2014<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">So when the word &#8216;need&#8217; is followed by the word &#8216;to&#8217;, you can just drop the T and attach a schwa to the end : needa&#8211;.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">We needa\u2014 We needa\u2014<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">We need\u00a0 to&#8211; we need to&#8211;\u00a0 we need to schedule a time<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">We need to schedule&#8211;<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">We need to schedule&#8211;<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">The schwa is said so quickly there.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">We need to schedule&#8211;<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">We need to schedule&#8211;<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">We need to schedule&#8211;<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">Schedule. Schedule.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">Notice the D makes the J sound: &#8211;dule,\u00a0 and we have a dark L here:\u00a0 &#8211;dule, &#8211;dule, &#8211;dule, &#8211;dule.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">Schedule. Schedule. Schedule.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">Make that syllable as quickly as you can:\u00a0 Schedule. Schedule. Schedule a&#8211; Schedule a&#8211;<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">Then link the L into the schwa through the word \u2018a\u2019.\u00a0 Schedule a&#8211; Schedule a\u2014<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">We need to schedule a\u2014<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">We need to schedule a\u2014 We need to schedule a\u2014 We need to schedule a time.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">So these things, this linking ending consonant to beginning vowel, dropping a T and linking it in these little things all help to make the line smooth, smooth, smooth.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">We need to schedule a\u2014 Ahhhhhh&#8211;<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">There\u2019s no break in the sound, there&#8217;s no abrupt pitch change.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">The pitch is gliding up or gliding down.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">We need to schedule a\u2014\u00a0 We need to schedule a\u2014<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">We need to schedule a\u2014\u00a0 We need to schedule a\u2014\u00a0 We need to schedule a time\u2014<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">We need to schedule a time\u2014time&#8211;, True T there.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">The T is always a\u00a0 true T\u00a0 when it starts a stressed\u00a0 syllable.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">Time&#8211; time&#8211; time to meet to plan the client presentation<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">to meet to plan&#8211; to meet to plan&#8211;<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">Okay, two more word \u2018to\u2019,\u00a0 and this time they&#8217;re both made with the true T and the schwa.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">Meet to&#8211; and time to&#8211;, time to meet to&#8211; time to meet to&#8211;<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">time to meet to&#8211; time to meet to&#8211; time to meet to&#8211;<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">So the T will always be a true T when it follows the T.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">And actually again you can think of it as being dropped because there&#8217;s really just one T sound.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">Meet to&#8211; Meet to&#8211; Meet to&#8211;<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">So just put a schwa sound at the end of the word &#8216;meet&#8217;. Meet to&#8211;<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">Time to&#8211; Now, this could&#8217;ve been a Flap T. Time to&#8211; Time to&#8211;<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">But she made a True T: Time to&#8211; Time to&#8211;<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">As long as the vowel is reduced and the word is said quickly, it sounds right.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">Both of flap T and a true T sound good and sound right.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">Time to meet to&#8211; time to meet to&#8211; time to meet to plan the client presentation<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">To plan the client presentation&#8211;<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">Okay, so cli&#8211; client presentaaaa- tion.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">The stressed syllable is a little clearer a little longer.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">The pitch is gliding up and gliding down. no abrupt change in pitch.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">To plan the client presentation&#8211;<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">To plan the client presentation&#8211;<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">To plan the client presentation&#8211;<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">So &#8216;plan&#8217;, again a content word, but it&#8217;s not quite as long as &#8216;client&#8217; and &#8216;taaayy&#8211;&#8216;<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">Those two syllable to me are a little bit clearer a little bit more stressed.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">Plan&#8211; plan&#8211; plan the client presentation<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">Plan&#8211; plan&#8211;. This is one of the tough cases where we have the AH vowel followed by a nasal consonant.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">Plaaaaan<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">So you want to go through an AH vowel.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">You relax the back of the tongue before making the N and that gives us this UH vowel<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">or you could think of it as a schwa before the end.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">Plaaan. Plan. We don&#8217;t want plan.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">Plan. That&#8217;s too bright. It&#8217;s too much in the face.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">Plan. Allows the placement to be a little lower.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">Meet to plan&#8211; meet to plan the&#8211; plan the&#8211;plan the&#8211; plan the&#8211;<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">client presentation.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">plan the&#8211; plan the&#8211; plan the client presentation<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">-tion ending, pronounced &#8216;shun&#8217; here.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">Make it fast. Don&#8217;t try to put an actual vowel sound in there.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">Remember the N takes over the schwa, it&#8217;s a syllabic consonant.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">That means there doesn&#8217;t have to be a vowel sound in that syllable.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">-tion -tion -tion. Presentation. Presentation.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">Presentation. Presentation. Presentation.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">zun&#8211; zun&#8211; zun&#8211; There&#8217;s another case here.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">Z, schwa, N. Presen&#8211; zun&#8211; zun&#8211; zun&#8211;<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">Where you don&#8217;t need to try to make a vowel sound in that syllable. Zun&#8211; zun&#8211;<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">Straight from Z to N,\u00a0 presentation, presentation.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">Presentation, presentation, presentation.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">And remember it&#8217;s all smooth: uuuhhhh. No breaks between syllables and no abrupt pitch changes.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">Pitch either slides up or slides down, it doesn&#8217;t jump.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">Presentation. We need to schedule a time to meet to plan the client presentation.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">Yeah. I&#8217;m ready.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">Yeah. Yeah. Yeah.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">Quick but also a clear up-down shape of stress: Yeah. Yeah. Yeah.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. I&#8217;m ready.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">I&#8217;m ready. I&#8217;m ready.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">M connecting right into the R, there&#8217;s no break: mmrrr&#8211; mmrr&#8211;<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">I&#8217;m ready. Uuhhhh uuhhh&#8211;<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">So even though it&#8217;s a sentence with two different words, it&#8217;s still very smooth, there&#8217;s no abrupt pitch changes.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">And all the sounds glide into each other, connected speech.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">I&#8217;m ready. Yeah. I&#8217;m ready.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">&#8216;Ready&#8217; has a flap T sound. Flap rr&#8211; rr&#8211; rr&#8211;<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">Ready&#8211; Ready&#8211; It&#8217;s not read&#8211; dd&#8211; dd&#8211; with that real D sound in the throat<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">It&#8217;s ready. rr&#8211; rr&#8211; rr&#8211;<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">Because the D comes between two vowels, flap the tongue.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">Ready. Ready.
