Video Transcript:<\/h2><\/p>\n You’ve seen the letter X, but did you know there’s no X sound in American English? Confusing, right? In this video, you’re going to learn the different sounds we use to pronounce the letter X.\u202fSo you’ll feel totally comfortable pronouncing words with this letter.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\nEvery once in a while, I get a question from someone about the X sound.\u00a0And I have to say, there is no X sound in American English. We have the letter X but let’s take a look at what sounds that letter actually\u00a0represents.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\nThere are four different ways this letter can be pronounced. First, we’ll go over those pronunciations,\u00a0then\u00a0we’ll go over the most common words with the letter X and which pronunciation those words have.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\nFirst, let’s go over the two most common pronunciations. In each of these words, the letter X makes two different sounds.\u00a0The word extra.\u00a0Before I tell you what sounds are there, I want you to listen and see if you can guess.\u00a0Extra.\u00a0Extra.\u00a0Now, I’m going to slow it down and exaggerate.\u00a0Extra.\u00a0Extra.\u00a0Extra.\u00a0Extra.\u00a0Kkk.\u00a0Ssss. K and S.\u00a0That’s the unvoiced version of this pronunciation.\u00a0Extra.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\nNow we don’t pronounce them with the separation. K is a stop consonant,\u00a0ek-\u00a0ek-. Did you hear how my voice abruptly stopped?\u00a0Ek– It wasn’t\u00a0ehh– That’s because of the K. You lift the back of the tongue to the soft palate.\u00a0Ekk–\u202fAnd that cuts off of the air, it cuts off the sound. Now, rather than pulling down the tongue by itself,\u00a0ekk–\u00a0kk–\u00a0kk– Rather than making that full K sound, you instead go right into the S.\u00a0Ekk–\u00a0sss—\u00a0ksss—\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\nSo when you pull your tongue down in the back, the front of your tongue, the front of your mouth is already in position for the S sound.\u00a0Ekkkksss— So when you release the air, release the tongue, everything’s ready to go for the S and the S sound is made.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\nFor the S, the teeth are together and the tip of the tongue is either pressing the back of the bottom front teeth, or it can point up a little bit.\u00a0Sssss.\u00a0Sssss. Practice just the KS sounds with me. Front of the mouth is in position for the S, and bring the back of the tongue up to the soft palate. Let air build up and release it by bringing the back of the tongue down.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\nKksss.\u202fKksss.\u202fKksss.\u202fKksss.\u202fKksss.\u202fKksss.\u202fLet’s put it into the word ‘extra’ slowly.\u00a0Extra.\u00a0Extra.\u00a0That’s the unvoiced pronunciation.\u202f\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\nBut there’s also a voiced pronunciation like in the word ‘exam’. The letter X still represents two sounds here. What sounds are you hearing now?\u00a0Exam.\u00a0I’ll pronounce it slowly.\u00a0Eeggggg–\u00a0zzz–\u00a0eggzzaam.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\nG and Z.\u00a0Those are the voice versions of K and S so everything about the position is the same, but rather than releasing air,\u00a0ksss,\u00a0ksss, you release a voiced sound,\u00a0gzz,\u00a0gzzz,\u00a0gzzz.\u00a0Exam.\u00a0Exam.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\nYou know what I find interesting about these two pronunciations is that there’s a syllable break between the two sounds that this one letter X makes.\u00a0Exam.\u00a0Exam.\u00a0So the Z sound starts the stressed syllable.\u00a0Exam.\u202f\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\nThe word ‘except’.\u00a0The S sound starts the stressed syllable.\u00a0Except.\u00a0Okay, so those are the two most common pronunciations. What are the other two pronunciations of the letter X?\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\nIt can be a Z sound. This happens in two cases. First, when it starts a word. Two examples:\u00a0Xanthan. You may know this word because it’s a common ingredient in processed foods.\u202fXanthan.\u202fZ sound.\u00a0Xenophile.\u00a0Someone who loves foreign cultures, people, or customs.\u00a0Z sound.\u202fXenophile.\u202fThis is\u00a0X\u00a0at the beginning of a word.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\nAt the end of a word, it can also be a Z sound. These are words that we’ve borrowed from French. The combination EAUX and we may keep the French spelling with the X at the end but we use the American pronunciation. They’re plurals so we add a Z sound.\u00a0For example, the word ‘beau’.\u00a0A sweetheart, a male sweetheart.\u00a0Maybe you have lots of Beau’s. For the spelling of the plural, we may write an S or we may write an X. Both are acceptable in American English. But both are pronounced with the American English\u00a0rules which is\u00a0a Z sound at the end. It\u202fcan be a little confusing.\u202f\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\nIt can also be silent at the end of a few words. I’m thinking of the word ‘faux’ which\u00a0is another way of saying fake. My coat is faux fur not real fur.\u00a0Also\u00a0in the word ‘Bordeaux’ where we kind of use the French pronunciation.\u00a0Also in ‘roux’ again, a word borrowed from French, a mixture of fat and flour to thicken sauces.\u00a0Faux.\u00a0Bordeaux.\u00a0Roux.\u202fThe letter X is silent.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\nBut the most common pronunciations of the letter X are KS or GZ. I’ve gathered some words for each category and I found something interesting. Something interesting happens with the word ‘sex’ which, let’s face, it is an interesting word anyway. So we’ll go over that when we get to it. But first, I need your help. Almost every example I came up with where the sound is voiced, GZ looks the same.\u00a0EX and then the rest of the word.\u00a0I can’t tell if I can’t think of any more because I’m so focused on that or if there just aren’t many more.\u202f\u202f\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\nSo please put any words you can think of where the letter X makes the GZ sounds in the comments below.\u202f\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\nHere’s my list. Now, instead of KS, the sounds we get are KSH.\u00a0Ksshh.\u202fKkk-sshh.\u202f\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\nSexual.\u00a0So sex, sexy, we still have KS.\u00a0But as soon as it’s followed by U, sexual, sexual.\u00a0It changes. We now have KSH.\u00a0Sexual.\u00a0And actually, I thought of one other word. The word ‘luxury’ this is also different. It’s just like ‘sexual’ only it’s voiced, so it’s G and then\u00a0ddjjzz.\u00a0Lugg– there’s the G,\u00a0lugggjjzz,\u202fgggjjzz,\u202fgggjjzz,\u202fgggjjzz\u202fand there’s the\u202fgggjjzz\u202fsound.\u00a0Luxury.\u00a0Luxury.\u202f\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\nI couldn’t come up with any other words with this pronunciation.
