You guys loved my video on clothing\u00a0vocab, but said you needed more.\u202f So here is a vocabulary video about shoes.\u202f We have so many different kinds of shoes, don\u2019t we?\u202f In this video, you\u2019ll sit down with me and my sister-in-law, Lisa, while we go over many kinds of shoes and other vocabulary words relating to shoes.\u202f You\u2019ll get more comfortable pronouncing words like leather and ankle. You\u2019ll learn new terms in American English like\u00a0shearling\u00a0and \u2018fancy pants\u2019. \u202f\u00a0<\/span>\u202f\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\nI brought my sister-in-law Lisa here to\u00a0crowdsource, help me go through some shoes.\u00a0She’s\u00a0brought a bunch.\u00a0Let’s\u00a0see.\u202f\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\nProbably\u00a0too many.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\nNo, no such thing as too many shoes.\u00a0Now\u00a0Lisa just told me–\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\nThat\u00a0is argument in our house.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\nThese\u00a0are basketball shoes.\u202f\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\nRight\u00a0these are my daughter’s basketball shoes, there’s more support in ankle there.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\nOkay, I was saying I’m used to only ever seeing high-top basketball shoes. I’ve never seen low top basketball shoes.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\nThere we talked about two different styles of shoes:\u202f high tops, which go above the ankle, and low tops, which go below the ankle.\u202f\u00a0Pretty self-explanatory.\u202f The top of the shoe is either high or low.\u202f High tops, low tops.\u202f Say those with me.\u202f High tops, low tops. \u202f\u00a0<\/span>\u202f\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\nI was saying I’m used to only ever seeing high-top basketball shoes. I’ve never seen low top basketball shoes. I was afraid to let her wear the low tops.\u202f\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\nI was afraid to turn her ankle.\u00a0But\u00a0I guess it’s a thing now.\u202f\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\nOkay.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\nSo…\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\nSavannah’s very athletic because she also has soccer shoes.\u202f\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\nCleats.\u00a0Cleats, you would call these.\u00a0And\u00a0for some reason, people like to have\u00a0a\u00a0very different designs.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\nYeah.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\nThey want their cleats to stand out and be different from anyone else’s.\u00a0<\/span>\u202f\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\nCleats.\u202f So we talked about basketball shoes, and now we\u2019re talking about cleats.\u202f Cleats are shoes that have cleats for extra grip on the bottom.\u202f You can have soccer cleats, baseball cleats.\u202f A lot of sports shoes are called by the name of the sport:\u202f basketball shoes, tennis shoes, running shoes, soccer cleats.\u202f For sprinters on a track, their shoes are called spikes, and the spikes are much smaller than a cleat.\u202f Cleat, cleats, KL consonant cluster, EE vowel, T. Say that with me:\u202f cleat, cleats. \u202f\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\nThe word ‘spike’, SP consonant cluster.\u202fsome\u00a0people think they should make this a B. not true.\u00a0it’s\u00a0a very light P. sp, sp, sp. spike.\u00a0spikes. Say those with me: spike, spikes.\u00a0<\/span>\u202f\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\nThere\u2019s one thing I want to say about \u2018tennis shoe\u2019.\u202f One word ends in an S, tennis, the next word begins with an SH, shoe. We actually link these words together and the SH takes over the S.\u202f You may have noticed, we don\u2019t say tennis-shoe.\u202f\u00a0Tennis shoe.\u00a0We don\u2019t make an S and then an SH.\u202f We drop the S and connect with the SH.\u202f\u00a0Tenni-shoe.\u202f\u00a0Tenni-shoe.\u202f Say that with me.\u202f\u00a0Tennis shoe.\u00a0\u202f\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\nThe same is true of the word ‘dress shoe’.\u00a0We\u00a0drop the S at the end of ‘dress’ and connect with an SH.\u00a0Dress\u00a0shoe.\u00a0Dress\u00a0shoe.\u00a0A\u00a0‘dress shoe’ can be a term for either men’s shoes or women’s shoes that are more formal.\u202f\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\nSo\u00a0what other sports do you wear cleats in?\u00a0Baseball, right?\u202f\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\nBaseball, soccer…\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n>> And track.\u202fRunners\u00a0have different–\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n>> Right.\u202f\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\nThose are called spikes.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n>> Right?\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n>> Yeah.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\nBut\u00a0similar.\u00a0All\u00a0right we got some boots here.\u202f\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\nLots\u00a0of boots.\u00a0So\u00a0this is the kind of boot I tend to wear to work in the winter.\u00a0It\u00a0helps keep the leg warmer.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n>>\u00a0Okay.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n>> When it comes up high.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\nYeah.\u00a0Is\u00a0this a riding boot?\u00a0Or\u00a0is the riding boot the one that’s black and brown?\u00a0<\/span>\u202f\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\nThis kind of boot can be called a ‘riding boot’.\u202f It\u2019s basically a high boot with that defined heel to fit into stirrups.\u202f Of course, most people buy them for fashion and not for horseback riding, which is what they were originally made for. \u202f\u00a0<\/span>\u202f\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\nRiding boot.\u202f Did you know that \u2018riding\u2019 sounds just like this word \u2018writing\u2019 because of the Flap T?\u202f\u00a0Riding, riding boot.\u00a0Say that with me.\u00a0Riding.\u00a0Riding boot.\u00a0<\/span>\u202f\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\nThe word ‘Boot’.\u202f Here the letters OO make the\u00a0oo\u00a0sound, so your lips come into a tighter circle and then relax.\u202f I\u2019ll do it slowly.\u202f \u202fWatch my lips.\u202f Boot.\u202f The movement into and out of the lip position is important.\u202f You don\u2019t want them to just be a tight circle the whole time, boot, boot, boot.\u00a0that\u00a0sounds too closed:\u202f boot, boot. Relax, round in, and relax.\u202f Say that with me.\u00a0Boot, boot.\u00a0Notice I’m making a Stop T. you can make this into a Flap T if you’re connecting into a next word that begins with a vowel or diphthong.\u202f\u00a0<\/span>\u202f\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\nThis is a knee-high boot\u202fbasically.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\nRight.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\nIt’s not an above-the-knee. That’s a different boot.\u00a0<\/span>\u202f\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\nThere we heard two different terms to describe kinds of boots.\u202f Knee-high means it comes just below the knee.\u202f An above-the-knee boot would look like this. Say those with me.\u202f\u00a0Knee-high, above-the-knee.\u00a0\u202f\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\nThis is a knee-high boot basically.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\nRight.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\nIt’s not an above-the-knee. That’s a different boot.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\nThese are kind of ankle boots.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\nRight.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\nOr is it if\u00a0this an\u00a0ankle boot or is a boot that goes like that an ankle boot?\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\nOr those come–\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\nI think they both get called ankle boots.\u202f\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\nAnd then there’s booties which is funny just because it sounds like booties.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\nRight.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\nBut those are the ones that are cut like that.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\nYeah.\u202f\u00a0<\/span>\u202f\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\nAnkle boots and booties.\u202f What I was holding up was an ankle boot.\u202f The pronunciation of \u2018ankle\u2019 is a little tricky because the real pronunciation doesn\u2019t match what you\u2019ll see in a dictionary.\u202f What you\u2019ll see in the dictionary is this, the AA vowel followed by the NG consonant.\u202f\u00a0AA-ng,\u00a0ang,\u00a0ang, AA-nkle.\u202f That\u2019s not how we pronounce it.\u202f\u00a0Ankle.\u00a0The NG sound changes the AA Vowel so it\u2019s more like the AY diphthong:\u202f AY, ankle.\u202f\u00a0Ankle boot.\u00a0Say that with me.\u202f\u00a0Ankle boot.\u202f\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\nThen we have bootie.\u202f This can either be a boot like this, or, it\u2019s also something for newborn babies, like this.\u202f They\u2019re both called booties.\u202f The T here is a Flap T because it comes between two vowels.\u202f\u00a0Booties.\u202f Also, \u2018bootie\u2019 is a slang term for your butt.\u202f\u00a0Booties.\u202f\u00a0Booties.\u202f Say that with me.\u202f\u00a0Booties.\u00a0\u202f\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\nThese\u00a0are kind of ankle boots.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\nRight.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\nOr\u00a0is it, is this an ankle boot or is a boot that goes like that an ankle boot?\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\nOr\u00a0those come–\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\nI think they both get called ankle boots.\u202f\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\nAnd\u00a0then there’s booties which is funny just because it sounds like booties.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\nBooty, right.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\nBut\u00a0those are the ones that are cut like that.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\nYeah.\u202f\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\nSuede.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\nAnd\u00a0suede definitely.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\nSo\u00a0this is leather.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\nDifferent\u00a0from suede.\u00a0<\/span>\u202f\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\nLeather and suede.\u202f\u00a0Two common types of materials that shoes are made of.\u202f\u00a0Leather.\u202f This has that tricky TH.\u202f Here it\u2019s voiced,\u00a0th,\u00a0th, leather.\u202f Notice it\u2019s just the very tip of the tongue that comes through the teeth.\u202f\u00a0Leath,\u00a0th, leather, leather.\u202f Your tongue tip is already forward for the EH vowel, for that, it\u2019s just behind the teeth.\u202f\u00a0So\u00a0to make the TH, just bring it up, put it out a bit, and then bring your teeth together.\u202f\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\nLeath-\u00a0th,\u00a0th,\u00a0th, leather. These are rubber.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\nMm-hmm.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\nStill called a clog.\u202f\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\nClog.\u202f We also talked about two possible materials for the sole of the shoes, that is, the part on the bottom that touches the street.\u202f They can be wooden, made of wood, or rubber.\u202f\u202f\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\nClog.\u202f The letter O makes the AH as in FATHER sound here.\u202f Clog.\u202f Say that with me.\u202f Clog.\u00a0<\/span>\u202f\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\nWhen we went over \u2018boot\u2019, you learned the letters OO make the OO sound.\u202f Here, in \u2018wood\u2019 or \u2018wooden\u2019, they make the UH as in PUSH vowel.\u202f Uh, woo-, wood, wooden.\u202f Remember \u2018wood\u2019 and \u2018would\u2019 are homophones \u2013 their pronunciation is the same.\u202f\u00a0Wood, wooden.\u202f Say these with me.\u202f\u00a0Wood, wooden.\u00a0\u202f\u00a0<\/span>\u202f\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\nSo here are some more suede boots and these have a lower heel than others.
