as in &#8216;butter&#8217; [\u028c].<\/span> <span id=\"STtranscriptContent4\" class=\"STtranscriptContent\">Uh.<\/span> <span id=\"STtranscriptContent5\" class=\"STtranscriptContent\">As you can see,<\/span> <span id=\"STtranscriptContent6\" class=\"STtranscriptContent\">there is some drop in the jaw.<\/span> <span id=\"STtranscriptContent7\" class=\"STtranscriptContent\">Uh.<\/span> <span id=\"STtranscriptContent8\" class=\"STtranscriptContent\">And the tongue is resting on the bottom of the mouth,<\/span> <span id=\"STtranscriptContent9\" class=\"STtranscriptContent\">resting just behind these teeth.<\/span> <span id=\"STtranscriptContent10\" class=\"STtranscriptContent\">Uh,<\/span> <span id=\"STtranscriptContent11\" class=\"STtranscriptContent\">uh.<\/span> <span id=\"STtranscriptContent12\" class=\"STtranscriptContent\">The schwa [\u0259] is similar:<\/span> <span id=\"STtranscriptContent13\" class=\"STtranscriptContent\">the tongue position is the same,<\/span> <span id=\"STtranscriptContent14\" class=\"STtranscriptContent\">resting on the bottom of the mouth,<\/span> <span id=\"STtranscriptContent15\" class=\"STtranscriptContent\">touching just there.<\/span> <span id=\"STtranscriptContent16\" class=\"STtranscriptContent\">However, there is not the drop in the jaw.<\/span> <span id=\"STtranscriptContent17\" class=\"STtranscriptContent\">Uh.<\/span> <span id=\"STtranscriptContent18\" class=\"STtranscriptContent\">The &#8216;uh&#8217; as in &#8216;pull&#8217; [\u028a]:<\/span> <span id=\"STtranscriptContent19\" class=\"STtranscriptContent\">this has some drop of the jaw,<\/span> <span id=\"STtranscriptContent20\" class=\"STtranscriptContent\">but the lips do something completely different: <\/span><span id=\"STtranscriptContent21\" class=\"STtranscriptContent\">the come out a little bit because they purse in here at the corners.<\/span> <span id=\"STtranscriptContent22\" class=\"STtranscriptContent\">Pull.<\/span> <span id=\"STtranscriptContent23\" class=\"STtranscriptContent\">Now, there are how-to videos for each of these three sounds,<\/span> <span id=\"STtranscriptContent24\" class=\"STtranscriptContent\">but I wanted to bring them together so that we could compare.<\/span> <span id=\"STtranscriptContent25\" class=\"STtranscriptContent\">Let&#8217;s look at some photos.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span id=\"STtranscriptContent26\" class=\"STtranscriptContent\">All of the photos were taken as I said the word that contained the sound,<\/span> <span id=\"STtranscriptContent27\" class=\"STtranscriptContent\">not just the sound by itself.<\/span> <span id=\"STtranscriptContent28\" class=\"STtranscriptContent\">Here you see the &#8216;uh&#8217; as in &#8216;butter&#8217; and &#8216;uh&#8217; as in &#8216;supply&#8217; sounds compared.br&gt;<br \/>\n<\/span><span id=\"STtranscriptContent29\" class=\"STtranscriptContent\">On the left, the &#8216;uh&#8217; as in &#8216;butter&#8217;,<\/span> <span id=\"STtranscriptContent30\" class=\"STtranscriptContent\">you can see that the jaw is dropping more.<\/span> <span id=\"STtranscriptContent31\" class=\"STtranscriptContent\">The teeth are further apart,<\/span> <span id=\"STtranscriptContent32\" class=\"STtranscriptContent\">and the chin is further down.<\/span> <span id=\"STtranscriptContent33\" class=\"STtranscriptContent\">Here is butter vs. pull.<\/span> <span id=\"STtranscriptContent34\" class=\"STtranscriptContent\">You can see the corners of the mouth in pull are coming together just a little bit.<\/span> <span id=\"STtranscriptContent35\" class=\"STtranscriptContent\">This brings the top and bottom lip away from the face.<\/span> <span id=\"STtranscriptContent36\" class=\"STtranscriptContent\">The top lip here is covering the front teeth,<\/span> <span id=\"STtranscriptContent37\" class=\"STtranscriptContent\">whereas with the &#8216;uh&#8217; as in &#8216;butter&#8217; sound,<\/span> <span id=\"STtranscriptContent38\" class=\"STtranscriptContent\">you can see just a bit of the top teeth.<\/span> <span id=\"STtranscriptContent39\" class=\"STtranscriptContent\">Here are all three.<\/span> <span id=\"STtranscriptContent40\" class=\"STtranscriptContent\">Again, you can see that the jaw is dropped more on &#8216;butter&#8217;,<\/span> <span id=\"STtranscriptContent41\" class=\"STtranscriptContent\">leaving more space between the top and bottom lips.<\/span> <span id=\"STtranscriptContent42\" class=\"STtranscriptContent\">Here are butter and pull in profile.<\/span> <span id=\"STtranscriptContent43\" class=\"STtranscriptContent\">It is difficult to see,<\/span> <span id=\"STtranscriptContent44\" class=\"STtranscriptContent\">but the corners of the mouth in pull have come in a little bit,<\/span> <span id=\"STtranscriptContent45\" class=\"STtranscriptContent\">and the mouth looks slightly less relaxed.<\/span> <span id=\"STtranscriptContent46\" class=\"STtranscriptContent\">You can see a change in the top lip as it has slightly pulled away from the face.<\/span> <span id=\"STtranscriptContent47\" class=\"STtranscriptContent\">Here are all three in profile.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span id=\"STtranscriptContent48\" class=\"STtranscriptContent\">Now let&#8217;s look at a few sample words.<\/span> <span id=\"STtranscriptContent49\" class=\"STtranscriptContent\">First the schwa, or &#8216;uh&#8217; as in &#8216;supply&#8217; sound:<\/span> <span id=\"STtranscriptContent50\" class=\"STtranscriptContent\">supply,<\/span> <span id=\"STtranscriptContent51\" class=\"STtranscriptContent\">sofa,<\/span> <span id=\"STtranscriptContent52\" class=\"STtranscriptContent\">condition.<\/span> <span id=\"STtranscriptContent53\" class=\"STtranscriptContent\">Condition has two schwas,<\/span> <span id=\"STtranscriptContent54\" class=\"STtranscriptContent\">in the first and last syllable,<\/span> <span id=\"STtranscriptContent55\" class=\"STtranscriptContent\">condition.<\/span> <span id=\"STtranscriptContent56\" class=\"STtranscriptContent\">Conduct,<\/span> <span id=\"STtranscriptContent57\" class=\"STtranscriptContent\">compose.<\/span> <span id=\"STtranscriptContent58\" class=\"STtranscriptContent\">The &#8216;uh&#8217; as in &#8216;pull&#8217; sound:<\/span> <span id=\"STtranscriptContent59\" class=\"STtranscriptContent\">pull,<\/span> <span id=\"STtranscriptContent60\" class=\"STtranscriptContent\">good,<\/span> <span id=\"STtranscriptContent61\" class=\"STtranscriptContent\">should,<\/span> <span id=\"STtranscriptContent62\" class=\"STtranscriptContent\">could.<\/span> <span id=\"STtranscriptContent63\" class=\"STtranscriptContent\">The &#8216;uh&#8217;
