When I was 10, I was suddenly&#8230;<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">Suddenly, I didn&#8217;t hear the N.\u00a0 &#8216;Suddely&#8217; is what I heard.\u00a0 Sudden, sudden, suddenly.\u00a0 Suddenly.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">&gt;&gt; When I was 10, I was suddenly confronted&#8230;<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">Again, on the word &#8216;confronted&#8217;, I didn&#8217;t hear the N in the con-, con-.\u00a0 I heard &#8216;cuh&#8217;, co-fronted.\u00a0 Confronted, confronted.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">&gt;&gt; &#8230; with the anguish of moving from only home I had ever known.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">In the word &#8216;only&#8217;, the last vowel is the &#8216;ee&#8217; as in &#8216;she&#8217;, and it sounded too, um, relaxed.\u00a0 Too much like ih:\u00a0 on-lih.\u00a0 EE, only.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">&gt;&gt; My whole life, brief as it was&#8230;<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">My whole life, brief as it was.\u00a0 Again, the problem here is the word &#8216;brief&#8217;, which doesn&#8217;t have quite the pure &#8216;ee&#8217; as in &#8216;she&#8217; vowel.\u00a0 EE, brief.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">&gt;&gt; &#8230;gracefully touched with the laughter and tears of four generations.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">With has an unvoiced TH ending, and you said it here with a voiced.\u00a0 Gracefully touched with.\u00a0 Also, you paused after the word &#8216;gracefully&#8217;.\u00a0 It&#8217;s actually describing the word &#8216;touched&#8217;, so there shouldn&#8217;t be a pause there.\u00a0 Gracefully touched.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">&gt;&gt; When the final day came, I ran&#8230;<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">Ran.\u00a0 You say, &#8216;ran&#8217;, which is exactly how it&#8217;s written in IPA, with the N followed.\u00a0 But, as I noted in another blog entry, when it&#8217;s followed by an N, M, or NG, the AA vowel has another vowel before the consonant.\u00a0 It&#8217;s not a pure &#8216;aa&#8217;, in other words.\u00a0 AAuh, AAuh.\u00a0 It&#8217;s that &#8216;uh&#8217; that I&#8217;m talking about.\u00a0 Ran, raa-uh-n.\u00a0 I ran.\u00a0 Ran.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">&gt;&gt; When the final day came, I ran to the haven of the small back porch and sat alone.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">The word &#8216;alone&#8217;, just like &#8216;known&#8217;, that part needs to be just one syllable.\u00a0 A-lone.\u00a0 And I&#8217;m hearing it more as a-lo-win.\u00a0 So, make sure you make that one syllable.\u00a0 Lone, lone.\u00a0 It has the &#8216;oh&#8217; as in &#8216;no&#8217; diphthong, and it&#8217;s finished by the nn, N consonant sound.\u00a0 But it&#8217;s just one syllable.\u00a0 Alone.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">&gt;&gt; &#8230;shuddering.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">Shuddering.\u00a0 I hear &#8216;shuddery&#8217;.\u00a0 We have to make sure there&#8217;s that NG sound at the end:\u00a0 ng, ng.\u00a0 Shuddering, shuddering.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">&gt;&gt; as tears welled up from my heart.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">That sounded really good.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">&gt;&gt; Suddenly, I felt a hand rest of my shoulder.\u00a0 I looked up to see my grandfather.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">The word &#8216;grandfather&#8217;.\u00a0 Um, I hear you emphasizing the &#8216;fa&#8217;, but it really should be &#8216;grand&#8217;, grandfather.\u00a0 And, perhaps as a result of you emphasizing the &#8216;fa&#8217; syllable, you&#8217;re placing a real small shadow vowel after the word &#8216;grand&#8217; &#8212; grand-uh-father &#8212; but it should just be &#8216;grandfather&#8217;, grandfather.\u00a0 And, you may note that I&#8217;m not even really saying a D at all.\u00a0 Grannn-father, grandfather.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">&gt;&gt; It isn&#8217;t easy, is it, Billy?<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">Now here, you say &#8216;it isn&#8217;t easy&#8217;, all on the same pitch pretty much.\u00a0 But, we want to really emphasize here that it isn&#8217;t easy, so I would use more inflection when you speak here.\u00a0 It isn&#8217;t easy, or something like that where there&#8217;s more change in pitch to bring out those words a little bit more, since they are important.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">&gt;&gt; He said softly.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">He said softly.\u00a0 After the D in the word &#8216;said&#8217;, I heard a shadow vowel again, just like in the word &#8216;grandfather&#8217;.\u00a0 He said-uh, he said-uh, he said-uh softly.\u00a0 You were probably doing that, I&#8217;m guessing, to make sure that you&#8217;re enunciating your D well.\u00a0 And, in this case, as in many cases, said, said, when it&#8217;s followed by another word, you don&#8217;t necessarily bring the tongue down to make that sound.\u00a0 Said softly.\u00a0 So, the tongue does need to move up, said, into position for the D, but then just go ahead an move straight into the next word.\u00a0 Said softly.\u00a0 He said softly.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">&gt;&gt;\u00a0 &#8230;sitting down on the steps beside me.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">Now here, down, I heard something more like dauh.\u00a0 Down, so the lips need to come in to make the second part of the &#8216;ow&#8217;
